SookSiam

SookSiam at IconSiam — Bangkok’s Best Thai Food Hall Explained

SookSiam is one of the best things to do in Bangkok that most visitors overlook. Spread across the entire ground floor of Icon Siam, it’s an indoor recreation of a traditional Thai market — but done on a scale and with a level of detail that genuinely impresses. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

SookSiam is just one part of ICONSIAM’s massive dining scene. For luxury riverside spots, rooftop restaurants, and international fine dining, check out our full ICONSIAM Restaurants & Dining Guide.

What Is SookSiam?

SookSiam is a 30,000 square meter indoor Thai community market occupying the ground floor of Icon Siam. The concept is to bring together all 77 Thai provinces under one roof — their regional food, crafts, products, and cultural heritage. It’s not a tourist-trap recreation of Thailand; it’s designed for Thai visitors as much as international tourists, which keeps the quality and authenticity high.

The centerpiece is an indoor canal with wooden market boats floating through it, recreating the look of Bangkok’s historic floating markets. Vendors sell from the boats and the surrounding stalls. It’s genuinely atmospheric.

What to Eat at SookSiam

This is the main reason to visit. SookSiam has some of the best and most varied Thai food in Bangkok at prices that bear no relation to the luxury mall above. Expect to pay 50–150 THB for most dishes — comparable to a street food market.

Regional Specialties to Try

  • Khao Soi (Northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup) — not easy to find well-made in Bangkok; SookSiam has good versions from Chiang Mai vendors
  • Gaeng Som (Southern sour curry) — properly spicy and sour, served with rice
  • Khanom Jeen (fermented rice noodles with various Southern curries) — a genuine Southern Thai specialty
  • Mango sticky rice — several vendors, typically 80–120 THB, made fresh throughout the day
  • Rote (Thai flatbread) — made to order, sweet or savory fillings
  • Thai desserts and sweets — an enormous variety of traditional Thai sweets, many region-specific

Tips for Eating at SookSiam

  • Go slightly off peak (before noon or after 2pm on weekdays) if you want seating easily. Weekend lunchtimes get genuinely busy.
  • Cash and card both work at most stalls, though small vendors may prefer cash
  • The seating is communal — find a table, then go to the vendors and bring your food back
  • Many stalls have picture menus — pointing works fine if language is a barrier
  • The quality varies between vendors — look for the stalls with longest queues of Thai customers for the best food

Shopping at SookSiam

Beyond food, SookSiam has genuine craft and product vendors from across Thailand. It’s a better source for souvenirs and Thai-made goods than most tourist markets, because the vendors are regional specialists rather than generic souvenir sellers:

  • Thai silk and cotton textiles, often from specific weaving regions
  • Hand-painted ceramics and pottery
  • Thai herbal products (balms, soaps, teas)
  • Regional food products to take home (dried chilies, curry pastes, jasmine rice varieties)
  • Traditional Thai musical instruments
  • Hand-carved woodwork and lacquerware

SookSiam Events and Performances

SookSiam hosts regular cultural performances on its main stage — traditional Thai dance, Muay Thai demonstrations, regional music. There’s no fixed schedule, but performances happen most weekend afternoons. Check the Icon Siam website or ask at the information desk on arrival for the day’s program.
