Patong — The Heart of Phuket Tourism

Patong is where most first-time Phuket visitors end up, and for good reason: it has everything in one place. A 3km beach, hundreds of restaurants, the infamous Bangla Road nightlife strip, rooftop bars, cooking classes, diving shops, boat trip operators — all within walking distance. If you want maximum convenience and don’t mind crowds, Patong delivers.

The downside is the crowds themselves, and the associated noise. Bangla Road on a Saturday night is genuinely overwhelming if you’re not there for it. Beach vendors are persistent. The beach itself gets busy from mid-morning onwards in high season (December–March). Hotels in Patong span every price point from backpacker hostels to beachfront five-stars.

Choose Patong if: it’s your first time in Phuket, you want nightlife options, you want everything walkable, or you want the widest hotel price range.

Kata — The Family and Surfer’s Choice

Kata is 15 minutes south of Patong and feels like a different island. The beach is smaller, prettier and less crowded. The main Kata beach has a genuine surf break in the wetter months (May–October), making it popular with surfers and bodyboarders. The town area has a good selection of restaurants and a laid-back atmosphere without Patong’s excesses.

Kata Noi, the smaller beach just south of Kata, is one of Phuket’s best-kept secrets — a compact, sheltered bay with calm water and far fewer visitors than the main beach. The Kata Noi area has some excellent boutique hotels and the legendary Mom Tri’s Boathouse restaurant.

Choose Kata if: you’re travelling with children, you want a beach holiday over a party holiday, you surf or bodyboard, or you want a more genuine local atmosphere.

Karon — The Quiet Alternative

Karon has a 3km beach that’s almost as long as Patong’s but typically far less crowded. It sits between Patong and Kata geographically and benefits from proximity to both without fully belonging to either. The beach itself is beautiful — wide white sand, clear water, and enough space that you can always find a quiet spot. The town area is quieter and less developed than its neighbours, with a good night market and straightforward restaurant options.

Hotel prices in Karon are generally lower than Patong or Kata for equivalent quality, making it good value. Taxis and songthaews to Patong (15 minutes) or Kata (10 minutes) are readily available if you want more action.

Choose Karon if: you want a quiet beach stay, you’re on a tighter budget, or you want space and calm without being completely remote.

The Verdict

For most first-time visitors, Patong makes sense for the convenience. families or couples wanting a proper beach holiday, Kata is the better choice. For value and quiet, Karon delivers. All three are on the west coast and driving between them takes under 20 minutes.
