The Cost of living is a Major part of coming to live in Thailand, it has has long been one of the world’s favourite destinations for holidaymakers, retirees, digital nomads and long-term travellers. One of the biggest reasons is the country’s excellent value for money.
Whether you’re planning a short holiday, spending a few months working remotely, or considering a permanent move, understanding the cost of living in Thailand will help you budget with confidence.

My Experience of Living in Thailand
I have been coming to Thailand for 15 years, and now I’m retired and living here. Over the years, we have built a home with the plan to retire here in Issan. During this time, we built our home, purchased our car and motorbikes before I made the plunge to leave the UK.
So how am I finding it? Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a bed of roses; everything is going to be so easy, it’s not, but the life you can have doing it right will be worth it in the end. I cannot write all the tricks and tips of living in Thailand, or I would be here for days.
If you are thinking about Thailand as your home, get a few things sorted first: holidays! Not just a 2-week holiday; come for a month at a time, travel and visit this amazing country, as Thailand is very good at seducing you.
My advice would be for making the move
1. Income and savings; this is vital for your future here
2. Where do you want to live? Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui, Isaan
3. A Base/home? Maybe a condo in Bangkok or Phuket if it’s a home. Build it
Get these 3 main things sorted first before you come to live in Thailand
In my opinion, what nobody talks about is the highest cost of living here: it’s not your utility bills, not your rent, it’s the food, but also take into account your visa costs, transport costs, tips- yes, tips do add up when you are living here and not just tips in restaurants; it’s everywhere in life.
Your TikTok friend living here for 5 minutes telling you how cheap it is to eat a pound of meals at 7/11 sounds fantastic, but in reality, this is not the case. Plan-Plan-Plan
