Buriram, Thailand: Complete Travel Guide 2027 | What to Do, See and Know
Buriram travel guide: Buriram sits quietly in the heart of Thailand’s northeast, a provincial city most visitors pass over on the way to somewhere else. In 2027 that changes. The Chang International Circuit hosts the OR Thailand Grand Prix — MotoGP — in March, the Buriram Marathon brings the world’s only World Athletics Gold Label night race to the city streets in January, and the Khmer temple complexes at Phanom Rung and Prasat Muang Tam rank among the most striking historical sites in Southeast Asia. This guide covers everything you need: how to get to Buriram, where to stay, what to do, how to get around and what to eat.
Why Visit Buriram in 2027
For most of the year Buriram is a calm, likeable Thai provincial city with good food, warm people and two extraordinary Khmer temples within easy day-trip range. In January and March 2027 it becomes something else entirely.
The Buriram Marathon on 23 January 2027 is the only World Athletics Gold Label night marathon in the world. The race starts after dark, runs through the city streets past 70,000 spectators and 280 food stalls, and finishes on the track inside Chang International Circuit under floodlights. It is a genuinely unique sporting event whether you are running or watching from the roadside.
The OR Thailand Grand Prix on 5-7 March 2027 brings MotoGP’s full factory teams to Chang Circuit for three days of world-class racing. Chang is one of the most fan-friendly rounds on the calendar — the circuit is close to the city, tickets are priced well below most European rounds, and the Thai crowd atmosphere is exceptional.
Even outside those two weekends, Phanom Rung alone makes Buriram worth a detour. The Khmer sanctuary on top of an extinct volcano is one of Thailand’s great historical sites, and it is rarely crowded.

Getting to Buriram
Here are the primary travel options:
| Mode | Transport | Approx. Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | Don Mueang (DMK) to Buriram (BFV) | 1 hour | Speed & convenience |
| Train | Krung Thep Aphiwat to Buriram Station | 6–8 hours | Budget & scenery |

By Air
Buriram Airport (BFV) sits around 8km northwest of the city center and accepts domestic flights from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Nok Air operates the route with multiple weekly frequencies; flying time is approximately one hour. During MotoGP and marathon weekends additional capacity is sometimes scheduled, but seats sell out weeks in advance — book as soon as you have your event tickets confirmed.
Budget around 800-2,500 THB one way depending on how far ahead you book. Check AirAsia as well as Nok Air when searching — both Bangkok airports (Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi) serve Buriram at different times of year.

By Train
The train is the most comfortable ground option and one of the more pleasant ways to arrive. State Railway of Thailand’s Northeastern Line runs directly from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station) to Buriram station. Daytime services take approximately 5.5-6 hours; overnight sleeper trains take a little longer but arrive in the early morning, which works well for arriving the night before an event.
A second-class sleeper berth costs around 600-800 THB and is good value. Book online at the SRT website or through 12Go.Asia. For marathon and MotoGP weekends, book your return train as early as possible — trains out of Buriram fill up fast after major events.

By Bus
Buses depart regularly from Bangkok’s Northern and Northeastern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) for Buriram throughout the day. The journey takes approximately 6-7 hours. VIP and first-class coaches with reclining seats cost around 400-600 THB. Nakhon chai Air is one of the better operators on this route — reliable air conditioning and decent on-board service. Buses drop off at Buriram’s main bus terminal, which is close to the city center.

By Car
Driving from Bangkok to Buriram takes approximately 4-4.5 hours without heavy traffic via Highway 1 (Phahon Yothin) north, then Highway 2 (Mitra hap) east towards Korat, then Highway 226 southeast to Buriram. Roads are well-maintained and clearly signed. A rental car gives you the flexibility to visit Phanom Rung and Muang Tam on your own schedule, which is the main advantage over public transport.

Where to Stay in Buriram
Buriram’s hotel stock expanded noticeably after MotoGP joined the calendar, and there are now reasonable options at every price point. The two practical bases are the city canter and the circuit area — they are only 5km apart, so neither choice significantly inconveniences you.
Wider Accommodation & Surrounding Districts
- Best for: Peak event weekends when city hotels book out fully, or travelers seeking quiet countryside resorts.
- Options: Homestays and eco-resorts near Nang Rong or Prakhon Chai (ideal for visiting Phanom Rung).
Finding Accommodation for Thailand MotoGP 2027
Planning to attend the Thailand Grand Prix at Chang International Circuit on 5–7 March 2027? Accommodation availability around Buriram may already be limited for race weekend.
In an October 2026 accommodation search for 4–8 March 2027, Booking.com displayed just four properties near the circuit, while Agoda showed eleven hotels and homestays within approximately 20 km.
These results are a snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability. Properties, prices and booking conditions can change.
Our advice: Compare more than one booking platform, consider hotels and homestays farther from the circuit, and check how you’ll travel to and from the race before making a reservation.

City Centre
Staying in the city puts you within walking distance of restaurants, markets and the best local food, with a short tuk-tuk or Grab ride to the circuit. It is the better base for marathon visitors, since the race route runs through the city streets. Viang Thong Hotel is a reliable mid-range choice with a central location. Compact modern guesthouses and boutique hotels near the clock tower area start around 400-600 THB per night outside event periods.
During MotoGP and marathon weekends, city center rates typically jump to 2,000-5,000 THB per night for anything decent. Book months in advance for both event weekends — good rooms at reasonable prices disappear early.
Circuit Area
A cluster of hotels and resorts sits within 2-3km of Chang International Circuit. These make sense for MotoGP fans who want to walk back from the circuit after the race and be on-site early for the following day’s sessions. The trade-off is being further from the city’s food scene and night markets. Circuit-area accommodation books out first for race weekend.
Wider Area
Visitors who want to combine the temples with a Buriram event sometimes base themselves in the Nang Rong area (closer to Phanom Rung). This works well if you have a rental car, but adds distance to the circuit and city. For a first visit, city center or circuit area accommodation is more practical.

Buriram travel guide: Things to Do in Buriram

Phanom Rung Historical Park
The single most impressive attraction within range of Buriram. Phanom Rung is a Khmer Hindu sanctuary built between the 10th and 13th centuries on the rim of an extinct volcano, and the setting makes it unlike any other temple in Thailand. The approach along a 160-metre stone processional walkway leads to the main tower complex — the alignment on certain mornings lets sunlight pass through all 15 doorways in sequence, a spectacle that draws crowds for the April ceremony but is worth avoiding if crowds are not your thing.
Phanom Rung is approximately 65km southeast of Buriram city. Entry: 100 THB for foreign visitors. Open daily 06:00-18:00. Allow 2-3 hours at the site plus travel. You need your own transport or a hired driver — there is no direct public bus service to the temple.
Prasat Muang Tam
A smaller Khmer temple complex 8km from Phanom Rung, and the natural second stop on the same day trip. Muang Tam lacks Phanom Rung’s elevated drama but its moat, stone galleries and intact prangs are beautifully preserved and significantly less visited. The combination of Phanom Rung in the morning and Muang Tam in the early afternoon makes for a genuinely rewarding historical day out.
Chang International Circuit
On non-race days, the circuit offers guided tours of the track, pit lane and facilities. It is worth doing if you are arriving a day or two before MotoGP weekend and want to walk the layout before race weekend crowds arrive. Check the official circuit website for current tour availability and pricing.
Chang Arena — Buriram United Football Club
Buriram United’s home stadium is one of the finest club football grounds in Southeast Asia — 24,500 capacity, immaculate facilities, and a match atmosphere fueled by one of the most passionate fanbases in the Thai League. If Buriram United are playing at home during your visit, a match makes a genuinely good evening out. Tickets cost around 100-300 THB. Check fixtures at buriramunited.com.
The Buriram Water Tower
A local landmark known informally as the Buriram Castle. The city’s old water tower is illuminated after dark and gives Buriram an unexpectedly photogenic centerpiece. It is within walking distance of the city center hotels and worth a brief stop on an evening walk.
Isan Countryside and Villages
The road southeast towards Phanom Rung passes rice fields, palm trees, roadside food stalls and traditional Isan villages. If you have a rental car and half a morning to spare, the drive itself is a worthwhile introduction to the everyday life of Thailand’s northeast — a part of the country most short-break visitors never see.
Getting Around Buriram
Buriram city is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes from a central hotel. For reaching the circuit, airport, or the temples you need transport.
Grab
Grab (Thailand’s Uber equivalent) works in Buriram and is the most convenient option for individual journeys between the city center, circuit, train station and airport. Supply of drivers is decent inside the city but thinner towards the circuit and airport. During MotoGP weekend expect longer wait times on race days and the morning after — Grab surges with demand.
Tuk-tuks and Songthaews
Tuk-tuks are available near the train station and city center hotels. Agree the fare before you get in — 50-100 THB covers most city center journeys. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks running fixed routes) are very cheap but work best if you know the local routes; for the circuit, ask at your hotel whether they run a shared shuttle.
Car Hire
Strongly recommended if you plan to visit Phanom Rung and Muang Tam — neither site is reachable by public transport. Local rental companies operate in Buriram, and Budget Thailand has a city presence. During race weekends, rental cars book out quickly. Reserve in advance. An international driving permit is technically required to drive in Thailand on a foreign license.
Event Shuttles
During MotoGP weekend most hotels near the circuit or in the city center arrange shuttle services to Chang Circuit. Ask at booking whether this is included or available at a surcharge. It is usually the most stress-free way to arrive at the circuit on busy race days.
On MotoGP race weekend: A dedicated shuttle bus (P3 service) runs between Buriram Bus Terminal and the circuit during the event. This is the simplest option if you are staying in the city. More Info
Food and Local Life
Buriram is Isan in every sense. The food is northeastern Thai — bold, chilli-forward, lime-sour, and built around sticky rice rather than the jasmine rice of central Thailand. Eating well in Buriram costs very little, and the night market scene is one of the more enjoyable ways to spend an evening in a Thai provincial city.
Western food and Bars
There are a few places in Buriram for that home food you might be after: GP Bar and restaurant serving both Thai and western food, Farang Bar relaxed atmosphere a chill-out haven to relax and unwind, Swan Bar Great food, very reasonable prices and large portions, Music and sports all on tap, so this is a great place to spend a few hours. Paddy’s Bar Buriram offers a lively pub atmosphere with a diverse menu of Western food and refreshing drinks
Night Market
The main night market area around the clock tower and train station neighbourhood comes alive from late afternoon. Grilled meats, noodle soups, fried snacks, fresh tropical fruit, sweet rotis and an assortment of local specialties are available for 40-150 THB a dish. It is the best introduction to local food in Buriram and extremely good value.
Isan Dishes to Try
- Gai yang — grilled chicken marinated in lemongrass, fish sauce and coriander root, eaten with sticky rice and som tam. The gold standard of Isan street food.
- Som tam — green papaya salad, usually ordered with a heat level from 1-10. Isan-style som tam tends to be fiercer than Bangkok versions.
- Larb — minced pork or beef salad with toasted rice powder, lime, fish sauce and chilli. Can be served raw (larb dip) or cooked.
- Tom saep — a spicy, sour Isan soup with pork ribs, more herb-heavy and intense than central Thai soups.
- Moo ping — pork skewers from pavement stalls, available from morning to late night. Eat with sticky rice for 20-30 THB a skewer.
Coffee and Cafes
A small cafe scene has grown in Buriram, partly driven by the younger Thai visitors who come for race events. Coffee shops near the city center serve both Thai-style iced coffee (strong, sweet, with condensed milk) and international espresso drinks. Look around the streets near the water tower for the more recently opened spots.
Suggested Itinerary: Three Days Around an Event
Day 1: Arrival and City Orientation
Arrive in Buriram by flight, train or bus and check in to your hotel. Walk the city center, find the night market and eat well. If you’re attending the marathon, collect your race pack on arrival day if registration allows it — this removes one task from race day. Get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Day 2: Phanom Rung and Muang Tam
Hire a car or arrange a driver for the day. Drive southeast towards Nang Rong and then on to Phanom Rung Historical Park (2-3 hours at the site). Continue 8km to Prasat Muang Tam (45-60 minutes). Return to Buriram city in the afternoon for a relaxed dinner before the main event the following day. Total driving time for the round trip is around 2.5-3 hours.
Day 3: Event Day
Marathon: Race starts after dark, so the day is yours to rest, hydrate and eat light. If you haven’t collected your race pack, do it in the morning. Warm up in the early evening and be on the start line as Buriram comes to life.
MotoGP race day: Head to the circuit from mid-morning. The Fan Zone opens before the first session and the full race atmosphere builds across the day. Walk back to your hotel or take the hotel shuttle after the podium ceremony.
